April 2019: Celebrated artist Raja Segar was Sri Lanka’s delegate at the Culture Summit Abu Dhabi, which was held from 7 April to 11 April at the Manarat Al Saadiyat, a contemporary arts and cultural centre located in Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Cultural District.
Segar, whose paintings and sculptures have brought him international recognition, participated for the second time at this prestigious annual forum that convenes leaders from the fields of arts, heritage, media, museums, public policy and technology, to identify ways in which culture can build bridges and promote positive change. At the inaugural Culture Summit in 2017, Segar created an Arabic Calligraphy painting.
Last year, Segar, one of Sri Lanka’s finest contemporary artists, participated in World Art Dubai, an annual art retail fair that provides a platform for a unique fusion of art, entertainment and education.
The Culture Summit Abu Dhabi, which attracted 350 delegates from 85 countries for its 2018 edition, is organised by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi in collaboration with five global partners that will curate and lead on their specific area of expertise. These partners are the Royal Academy of Arts, UNESCO, Guggenheim, The Economist Events and Google.
The theme of this year’s programme was ‘Cultural Responsibility & New Technology’, and a series of panels, performances and workshops throughout the event will engage participants on their ideas about the role of culture in improving our world and how creativity and technology can be harnessed for positive change.
Segar’s art works have been exhibited at galleries, exhibitions and events in UAE, Australia, England, Singapore, South Korea and India. In addition to displaying his artistic talent in the United Arab Emirates, Segar has participated in several other international exhibitions and held more than 20 one-man exhibitions to showcase his art pieces done mostly with his favourite medium oil and water color. The international exhibitions in which he has previously participated were the SAARC Artist event in 2002 in India, Gallery 202 in England in 1991 and the Global Icon exhibition in Singapore in 2014, as well as representing Sri Lanka in the 14th Gongju International Art Festival (GIAF) in 2017 in South Korea.
