“Power Comes with Responsibility”: President’s Historic Address to New Cabinet

COLOMBO: In a landmark address following the swearing-in ceremony of the new Cabinet Ministers at the Presidential Secretariat on November 18, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake outlined a transformative vision for Sri Lanka’s political landscape., emphasizing the weight of responsibility that comes with leadership. Held at the Presidential Secretariat on November 18, this event marked the formal commencement of the National People’s Power Government, a political milestone described by the President as a “decisive turning point in Sri Lankan politics.”

Dissanayake highlighted the significance of the electoral victories on September 21 and the subsequent parliamentary elections, which reflected a paradigm shift in the country’s political trajectory. “The people have made a bold choice to depart from the long-travelled path of our nation,” he noted, crediting the electorate for uniting across historical divisions.

A Call for Unity Beyond Electoral Divisions

President Dissanayake underscored the unprecedented unity achieved in this election, with the aspirations of citizens from all corners of the country—North, South, East, and West—coalescing around a shared vision. “This election has shattered boundaries, demonstrating that the politics of division no longer holds sway,” he said, extending gratitude to all Sri Lankans, including those who supported other political movements.

“There are no winners or losers in this election,” Dissanayake emphasized. “Instead, we all share a collective responsibility to uplift our nation.”

Commitment to Democracy and Good Governance

The President reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to preserving democratic values and political rights, describing the recent electoral process as one of the most peaceful in Sri Lankan history. “This experience is one every citizen of our nation has long hoped for,” he remarked, adding that it represents a new political culture focused on stability and progressive governance.

Dissanayake also called on the new Cabinet to prioritize democratic practices and citizen empowerment. “We must ensure that the rights of citizens are consistently elevated to higher qualitative standards,” he urged.

Acknowledging Historical Struggles and Marginalization

Reflecting on the long-standing challenges faced by Sri Lankans, Dissanayake painted a stark picture of the socio-economic and political struggles that fueled public demand for change. From economic hardship to systemic discrimination based on language, religion, and identity, he described the election results as a “symbol of freedom” for those who have endured oppression.

“Professionals, government officials, and marginalized communities have faced deep grievances,” the President said. “This victory represents an invitation to freedom for all who have suffered.”

The Responsibility of Power

Dissanayake candidly addressed concerns surrounding the potential misuse of power. Quoting the adage, “Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely,” he assured the public that the new administration is fully aware of the boundaries and responsibilities of governance.

“Our power is not unlimited. It comes with constraints and a purpose: to achieve the aspirations of our citizens,” he stated. The President urged ministers to exercise their authority with accountability, stressing that governance must always prioritize the collective good.

Diaspora’s Role and the Aspirations of Youth 

The President acknowledged the unprecedented support from the Sri Lankan diaspora, noting their active engagement during the elections. “Rarely has such enthusiasm been demonstrated from abroad,” he remarked, highlighting their contributions as pivotal to the electoral success.

Dissanayake also paid tribute to the younger generation, who he said played a transformative role through social media advocacy. “Their efforts reflected not a competition, but their hopes and goals for the nation,” he observed, urging the government to remain committed to these aspirations.

From Activism to Governance

Emphasizing the transition from political campaigning to governing, Dissanayake reminded the Cabinet that their performance will now be judged on the quality of governance delivered. “Before, we were judged on our activism; now, we will be evaluated on our ability to govern effectively,” he stated.

The President expressed confidence in the integrity and capability of his team, many of whom are new to Cabinet roles. “While you may be new to these positions, you are not new to politics or working for change,” he said, calling for collective effort to achieve the nation’s goals.

Charting a Path for Renewal and Liberation

Dissanayake outlined his vision for a “period of renewal” in Sri Lanka, pledging to create a more liberated and equitable environment. He stressed the importance of empowering professionals, upholding the rule of law, and ensuring fair economic participation for all citizens.

“Let us raise our voices together to achieve the victories our nation expects,” he concluded, urging the Cabinet to approach their responsibilities with unwavering dedication and integrity.
