Significant meeting between US and Chinese ambassadors to support Sri Lanka

COLOMBO: In a significant development, Chinese Ambassador Qi Zhenhong held a meeting with US Ambassador Julie Chung on June 13, during which both envoys reiterated the commitment of their respective countries to help Sri Lanka overcome its current crisis.

The Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka, which hosted the meeting, said the two Ambassadors held a friendly discussion on broad topics of mutual interest.

The Embassy further said that China and the US could work together to help Sri Lanka overcome its current difficulties.

Commenting on the meeting, U.S. Ambassador Chung said discussions centered on the political and economic situation in Sri Lanka and that there was an exchange of ideas on trade, investment and development.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had a telephone conversation with the US Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken on June 13.

The Prime Minister explained the current status of the ongoing discussions with the International Monetary Fund.

He added that Sri Lanka is looking to work closely with the United States and further strengthen ties between the two nations.

Anthony Blinken agreed to support Sri Lanka and to promote investment in Sri Lanka after the conclusion of the IMF talks.
