AMMAN, March 2020: The Embassy of Sri Lanka in partnership with the Sri Lanka Export Development Board organised a familiarisation tour of the Jordan market for a 13-member delegation of Sri Lankan entrepreneurs recently, as part of efforts to explore and seek entry into the Jordanian market which has been hitherto largely untapped by Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Jordan Shanika Dissanayake in her address at the Jordan Chamber of Commerce enumerated the endless possibilities that are available for Sri Lankans to strengthen and develop their business links and partnerships in Jordan. Ambassador Dissanayake called on the Chairpersons of the various Jordanian chambers who were present to invest and engage in Sri -Lanka which provides tremendous opportunities in sectors of hospitality, infrastructure, IT and manufacturing. She further stated that Sri Lanka exports internationally renowned world-class products.
Senator Nael Al Kabiriti, Chairman of the Jordan Chamber of Commerce, which is Jordan’s largest Chamber, also addressed the gathering stating that Sri Lanka can be proud of the hardworking and committed Sri Lankans who are well known and trusted in Jordan. He assured the fullest unstinted support of his Chamber in assisting the Sri Lankan entrepreneurs in entering the Jordanian market.
A single country exhibition on Sri Lanka that was held alongside the meeting with Jordanian entrepreneurs garnered a lot of visibility for Sri Lanka’s value added exports which were showcased including Noritake porcelain products, beeralu lace, spices, Ceylon Tea, Rubber products, handicrafts and cosmetic products and medicinal products.
Following the business networking event and exhibition, the Sri Lankan delegation visited key supermarket chains, and held meetings with the CEOs of these retail entities. It is expected that given Jordan’s strategic position as a gateway into Iraq and Syria, Sri Lankan products could access a greater number of people and bigger global supply chains.
Meamwhile, the Sri Lankan Embassy in Jordan also participated at the International Day at the New English School in Kaldha on 25 February 2020 to promote Sri Lanka as a unique tourist destination and to showcase Sri Lanka’s heritage. The New English School has students from 40 nationalities and nearly 39 nationalities participated at this event. This is the first time that the Embassy has participated in the International Day at the New English School.
The Embassy exhibited handicrafts, porcelain items, traditional masks, batik paintings and Handloom material. Ceylon tea from the 7 different regions were served to educate Jordanians on the different varieties of tea produced in Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan key tags gifted by the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Board and Ceylon tea in laminated pouches gifted by the Sri Lanka Tea Board were given away to the visitors while Sri Lankan delicacies were served to the attendees. Sri Lankan tourism brochures in the Arabic language were displayed to generate interest in the country.
