COLOMBO: Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has named Rohini Kaviratne as the SJB nominee for the post of Deputy Speaker in Parliament.
“Rohini Kaviratne ia strong activist of Women’s and Children’s rights will be our nominee for the post of Deputy Speaker.” Opposition Leader tweeted.
SLPP expected to propose Parliamentarian Ajith Rajapaksa as their candidate to the post.
Parliament will elect a deputy speaker when it convenes on the 17th May.
The Opposition Leader’s decision comes as Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in discussions with political parties has requesting them not to bicker over over the Deputy Speaker position and to nominate a female MP whose selection will be unanimous to the post. A female MP as Deputy Speaker will strengthen the female representation in Parliament, is the view of the new PM.
Parliament will appoint a deputy speaker when it convenes on May 17.
