COLOMBO: The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) led by former President Maithripala Sirisena has also decided to support the formation of the new government at the invitation of the Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe, following the announcement by the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) that they will support Wickremesinghe in cobbling together an administration to help overcome the economic crisis.
Sirisena, who is SLFP chairman, has informed his party’s decision in a letter to the Prime Minister. Earlier, Sirisena said that the only remedy for this political and economic crisis is to form a consensus government with the support of all parties. Addressing the media, Sirisena said that the country was passing through a difficult period and therefore every party was duty bound to come to a common platform to form a consensus government which can resolve the burning issues of the people.
Discussions were also continuing with the 11 party alliance of ‘independent’ MPS and other opposition political groups to secure their support to form a multi-party government.
The Prime Minister also invited Opposition Leader, Sajith Premadasa and his party, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) to form a non-partisan government, putting aside political differences and that goes beyond traditional parliamentary politics.
The Prime Minister has sought the Opposition Leader’s positive and swift response as the future of the country was facing a serious situation day by day.
