NEW YORK: The Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the United Nations in New York transformed its venue into a vibrant showcase of the island nation’s natural and cultural treasures. The second annual “Beauty of Sri Lanka” photographic exhibition, organised in collaboration with the America-Sri Lanka Photographic Art Society of Los Angeles, drew diplomats and guests into a vivid exploration of Sri Lanka’s landscapes, wildlife, and heritage through over 80 striking images.
The event, held in the heart of New York’s diplomatic community, offered a window into Sri Lanka’s lush biodiversity and storied past. Chatura Perera, the Charge d’Affaires a.i., opened the exhibition with a warm address, highlighting the power of visual storytelling to convey the island’s allure. He commended the America-Sri Lanka Photographic Art Society for their dedication to sharing these captivating scenes with international audiences.
A distinguished guest, Ms. Blanca Montejo, Deputy Chef de Cabinet at the Office of the President of the General Assembly, emphasised the broader significance of the event. “The essence of diplomacy extends well beyond formal meetings,” she said. “At its core, diplomacy is about connecting cultures, bridging divides and fostering mutual understanding; it’s about celebrating the people that make up the mosaic of humanity.” Her words underscored the exhibition’s role in fostering cultural exchange.
Attendees were visibly moved by the previously unseen images of Sri Lanka’s wildlife and scenic vistas, which resonated deeply with the spirit of Earth Day, observed just a week earlier on 22 April. Ms. Montejo, in presenting mementoes to the photographers, noted, “Each photograph captures an aspect of what makes Sri Lanka so unique and so beautiful.” The event’s success was evident in the enthusiastic reactions of guests, who marvelled at the vivid portrayals of the nation’s flora, fauna, and cultural landmarks.
Originating in Los Angeles, the exhibition’s journey to New York marks a significant moment in its tour, with plans to continue captivating audiences in Washington, D.C.. The event stands as a testament to the enduring power of art to bridge nations and inspire appreciation for the world’s diverse beauty.
