COLOMBO: In a significant stride towards digital transformation, Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath, in collaboration with the Registrar General’s Department, has introduced an electronic service aimed at easing the process for overseas Sri Lankans to acquire certified copies of birth, marriage, and death certificates. This pilot project enables Sri Lanka Missions abroad to directly access the e-BMD (electronic Birth, Marriage, and Death certificate) database, marking a pivotal advancement in consular services.
The initiative, initially rolled out through embassies and consulates in Tokyo, Kuwait, Doha, Milan, Toronto, Melbourne, and Dubai, is set to expand to all Sri Lankan Missions worldwide. This expansion aims to provide a seamless service to the Sri Lankan diaspora, eliminating the need for family members or representatives in Sri Lanka to physically visit the Registrar General’s Office to obtain these crucial documents.
During the launch at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Minister Herath emphasized the project’s role in Sri Lanka’s journey towards becoming a digitally advanced nation. “This initiative is not just about easing access to vital records; it’s a testament to our government’s commitment to extend digitalization efforts to our citizens abroad,” he stated. Surrounded by key officials, including Deputy Minister Arun Hemachandra, Secretary Aruni Ranaraja, and Registrar General W.R.A.N.S. Wijayasinghe, the minister virtually connected with the participating missions abroad to mark the project’s commencement.
Implemented rapidly within two months, the service is a clear indication of the government’s dedication to enhancing public service through digital means. By directly addressing the needs of the overseas community, the project promises to significantly improve the efficiency of consular services, making it a landmark achievement in digital governance.
The launch of this e-service demonstrates a forward-thinking approach to solving long-standing issues faced by the Sri Lankan diaspora, showcasing the tangible benefits of digital transformation in improving the quality of life for Sri Lankans around the globe.
