Proposal to conduct GCE (O/L) exam overseas gaining momentum

GENEVA: A proposal by the Department of Examinations to conduct the G.C.E (O.L) Examination overseas for the children of Sri Lankans living abroad is gaining momentum and has been well received by many Sri Lankan diplomatic missions.

With a considerable number of Sri Lankan expatriates living and working in key cities around the world, especially in countries in the Middle East, their children study at international schools and appear for foreign examinations. However, since some of these students may wish to sit for the G.C.E (O.L) Examination with the prescribed subjects or part thereof, the Department of Examinations has informed foreign missions through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs about the possibility of conducting the G.C.E (O.L) Examination overseas.

Among the Sri Lankan missions that have announced this proposal on their websites are Sri Lanka’s Permanent Mission to the UN in Geneva, the Sri Lankan Embassy in the United States and Oman, the Sri Lankan High Commission in Singapore and Malaysia, and the Consulate General in Los Angeles and Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

Prospective candidates have to submit  details such as full name, address in country of residence, gender, age, passport No., telephone No., email address, subjects required (all the prescribed subjects for G.C.E. O/L or parts thereof), and medium (i.e. Sinhalese, Tamil or English). Based on its mandate that enables conducting and certifying all public-school examinations, the Department of Examinations will arrange all test administration procedures while the funding should be borne by the parents/guardians or the candidates.

“The Department of Examinations of Sri Lanka has requested through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from this Consulate General to send the profiles of candidates who wish to sit for G.C.E. O/L Examination scheduled to be held in December 2018.

“If this proposal is implemented, the Department of Examinations will make all arrangements to conduct the G.C.E. O/L examination in Dubai or other suitable city,” the Consulate General for Dubai and the Northern Emirates of the UAE said in a special notice.

It said that candidates, who are residing in Dubai and the Northern Emirates, and who wish to sit for the G.C.E. O/L Examination scheduled to be held in December 2018 may therefore send their details to the Department of Examinations at exams@doenets.lk., marking a copy to slcg.dubai@mfa.gov.lk
